Most of us know this parable:

"What is your opinion? If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills and go in search of the stray? And if he finds it, amen, I say to you, he rejoices more over it than over the ninety-nine that did not stray." (Mt 18:12-13)

It speaks of the importance of finding what is lost. This parable is fitted neatly between two discourses on sin and its dangers and is followed by the parable of the unforgiving servant. The relationship is to the need for repentance and the joy in heaven that comes with it.

However, have you ever considered it to be related to the Church? What is the Church? Is it a place to go once a week for an hour? Is it a place we visit because our parents have always taken us there? Or is it something more?

Our late Holy Father, Pope Francis, stated in his interview with the Jesuit magazine La Civiltà Cattolica:

"The thing the Church needs most today is the ability to heal wounds and warm the hearts of the faithful; it needs nearness, proximity. I see the Church as a field hospital after battle."

Is this what our Church looks like? How does it relate to Matthew 18:12-13?

The Church is where those who do not know Jesus can have an intimate encounter with Him. We know that not everyone is saved, yet God wants all to be saved—it is still a free choice. It is the mission of the Church to find those who are not saved and bring them to Christ. The pews should be filled with sinners needing redemption. We all know they are out there.

The Church should not be a dry and lifeless museum of saints. The Church is here to feed and strengthen those who believe in Jesus. That is, to empower the faithful for more. Therefore, those saved in the Church must work to help those who are not.

The Church has the message of salvation, and it needs to reach those who need to know about it. It is not about making those who are saved and have heard the message comfortable. Instead, in charity, those who have Jesus should be focused on ways to share Him and get the message about Jesus and His Church to those who do not know Him or have fallen away.

Let our Church be filled with sinners seeking repentance. Let the building rock with joy at the finding of the one by the other ninety-nine.

Uno entre cien

La mayoría de nosotros conocemos esta parábola:

"¿Qué os parece? Si un hombre tiene cien ovejas y una de ellas se descarría, ¿no deja las noventa y nueve en el monte para ir a buscar la descarriada? Y si la encuentra, de cierto os digo que se regocija más por ella que por las noventa y nueve que no se descarriaron." (Mt 18, 12-13)

Habla de la importancia de encontrar lo que se ha perdido.

Esta parábola encaja perfectamente entre dos discursos sobre el pecado y sus peligros, y es seguida por la parábola del siervo implacable.

La relación es con la necesidad de arrepentimiento y el gozo en el cielo que viene con él.

Sin embargo, ¿alguna vez has considerado que esté relacionada con la Iglesia?

¿Qué es la Iglesia? ¿Es un lugar al que ir una vez a la semana durante una hora? ¿Es un lugar que visitamos porque nuestros padres siempre nos han llevado allí? ¿Es algo más?

Nuestro difunto Santo Padre, el Papa Francisco, declaró en su entrevista con la revista jesuita La Civiltà Cattolica:

"Lo que más necesita la Iglesia hoy es la capacidad de sanar heridas y reconfortar los corazones de los fieles; necesita cercanía, proximidad. Veo a la Iglesia como un hospital de campaña después de la batalla."

¿Es así como es nuestra Iglesia? ¿Cómo se relaciona con Mateo 18:12-13?

La Iglesia y su misión

La Iglesia es el lugar donde quienes no conocen a Jesús pueden tener un encuentro íntimo con Él.

Sabemos que no todos se salvan, pero Dios quiere que todos se salven; sigue siendo una elección libre.

La misión de la Iglesia es encontrar a quienes no se salvan y llevarlos a Cristo. Las bancas deben estar llenas de pecadores que necesitan redención. Todos sabemos que están ahí fuera. La Iglesia no debe ser un museo de santos seco y sin vida.

La Iglesia está aquí para alimentar y fortalecer a quienes creen en Jesús. Es decir, para capacitar a los fieles para más. Por lo tanto, quienes se salvan en la Iglesia deben trabajar para ayudar a quienes no lo son. La Iglesia tiene el mensaje de salvación y necesita llegar a quienes necesitan conocerlo. No se trata de tranquilizar a quienes son salvos y han escuchado el mensaje.

Al contrario, con caridad, quienes conocen a Jesús deben enfocarse en compartirlo y llevar el mensaje de Jesús y su Iglesia a quienes no lo conocen o se han alejado.

Que nuestra Iglesia se llene de pecadores que buscan el arrepentimiento.

Que el edificio se estremezca de alegría al encontrar a los unos por los otros.
