Humility is not such a popular practice in the world. We can bear witness to this fact anytime we go to the grocery store, Walmart, or are driving through the roundabouts of Chino Valley. Life hands us opportunities all the time, it’s just a matter of if and how we pay attention to them. One might say man Oh man, what has gotten into people today? They rush through those things without skipping a beat, or without concern for who might be in the way. They fail to practice the yield. Jesus challenges us to think about practicing the yield.

He says be more concerned with your humbled approach and not your haughty one. Unfortunately, we as faithful are not immune from the haughty either. There are entitled people in every part of culture that do not yield to others, but that only makes our response against their backdrop all the more profound. This was the case when Jesus instructed his disciples not to take places of honor at the table but always be motivated by humility. Humility is an active charism of the Christian life, because the more that we identify with Christ crucified the better and the more we are humbled in awe of God. The Christian life is not a club of exclusivity but is a way of leading a life that is inclusive, and more Christ- centered.

Christians build bridges, we do not put up barriers. It is by practicing the yield before we speak, especially if we are bothered, that we refocus on a Godly response instead of trying to match a good come back that reflects more of a worldly response than that of Jesus. It’s been said that bringing up sin makes people uncomfortable. I would imagine that is a good thing because sin should never be comfortable and it should be something we are very much aware of, especially as it pertains to us, and the things that we have the option of changing. To practice the yield, we immediately delay our response and allow it to reflect the values of our soul when we do.

We also open ourselves up to be a reflection of Christ, even when it is most challenging to do so. How is shooting off a thoughtless email going to be effective, especially from those that hide behind the keyboard? Keyboard courage is most prevalent today, but really not the most integrity. How is being anonymous opening up dialogue, or unfriending people going to solve anything? We are Christian and are called to practice the yield and bring the light into the darkness even in adversity.

Humility is a much-needed charism because for the Christian it flows from the greatest act of humility that Jesus embraced on the cross. We must not fear practicing it but embrace it with zeal.

Practica el rendimiento

La humildad no es una práctica tan popular en el mundo. Podemos dar testimonio de este hecho cada vez que vamos al supermercado, a Walmart o conducimos por las rotondas de Chino Valley. La vida nos presenta oportunidades todo el tiempo, solo es cuestión de si les prestamos atención y cómo. Uno podría decir: "¡Ay, Dios!, ¿qué le pasa a la gente hoy en día? Se apresuran a hacer las cosas sin perder el ritmo, o sin preocuparse por quién podría estar en el camino. No practican la rendición". Jesús nos reta a pensar en practicar la rendición.

Dice que nos preocupemos más por nuestro enfoque humilde que por el altivo. Desafortunadamente, nosotros, como fieles, tampoco somos inmunes a la altivez. Hay personas con derecho en cada parte de la cultura que no ceden ante los demás, pero eso solo hace que nuestra respuesta ante su contexto sea aún más profunda. Este fue el caso cuando Jesús instruyó a sus discípulos a no ocupar lugares de honor en la mesa, sino a estar siempre motivados por la humildad. La humildad es un carisma activo de la vida cristiana, porque cuanto más nos identificamos con Cristo crucificado, mejor y más nos humillamos en el asombro ante Dios. La vida cristiana no es un club de exclusividad, sino una forma de llevar una vida inclusiva y más centrada en Cristo.

Los cristianos construimos puentes, no ponemos barreras. Al practicar la rendición antes de hablar, especialmente si nos molesta, nos reenfocamos en una respuesta piadosa en lugar de intentar corresponder con una buena respuesta que refleja más una respuesta mundana que la de Jesús. Se ha dicho que mencionar el pecado incomoda a la gente. Me imagino que eso es algo bueno porque el pecado nunca debería ser cómodo y debería ser algo de lo que estemos muy conscientes, especialmente en lo que respecta a nosotros y a las cosas que tenemos la opción de cambiar. Para practicar la rendición, inmediatamente retrasamos nuestra respuesta y permitimos que refleje los valores de nuestra alma cuando lo hacemos.

También nos abrimos para ser un reflejo de Cristo, incluso cuando es más difícil hacerlo. ¿Cómo va a ser efectivo enviar un correo electrónico irreflexivo, especialmente de aquellos que se esconden detrás del teclado? La valentía del teclado es la más frecuente hoy en día, pero en realidad no la más íntegra. ¿Cómo va a resolver algo ser anónimo, abrir el diálogo o eliminar a la gente de sus amigos? Somos cristianos y estamos llamados a practicar el ceder y traer la luz a la oscuridad incluso en la adversidad.

La humildad es un carisma muy necesario porque para el cristiano fluye del mayor acto de humildad que Jesús abrazó en la cruz. No debemos temer practicarla, sino abrazarla con celo.

Humíllate en la presencia del Señor.
