For the next few weeks, depending on what Mass you attend, you might hear a different Gospel than your fellow parishioners. Why? Because we are entering a time before Easter where you will hear the word Scrutinies.

What are Scrutinies? The Scrutinies are rites celebrated on the Third, Fourth and Fifth Sundays of Lent, by those people who are preparing to be baptized at Easter, known as "The Elect". They are important and special rites of the Church. Whenever they are celebrated the Scripture readings of Year A of the liturgical cycle are used. The Scrutinies are described by the Church as “rites for self-searching and repentance, which are meant to uncover, then heal, all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect; to bring out, then strengthen all that is upright, strong and good. The Scrutinies are celebrated in order to deliver the elect from the power of sin and Satan, to protect them against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ, who is the way, the truth and the life. These rites, therefore, should complete the conversion of the elect and deepen their resolve to hold fast to Christ and to carry out their decision to love God above all.”

The Gospels on the three Sundays on which the Scrutinies are celebrated, teach the elect about the mystery of sin and fill them with the Spirit of Christ. Jesus described the purpose of His mission as “To give life in abundance” (John 10:10) Each of the Gospels that are proclaimed in the three Scrutinies illustrates this. The first Gospel (the Samaritan Woman at the well) tells us that Christ is the Living Water. The primary symbol in the reading of this Sunday is water. Water is a symbol of life, and it indicates that God wishes to give us life, as shown in the stories of the Israelites in the desert and the woman from Samaria at the well. The symbol of water also indicates baptism and looks forward to Easter when this is celebrated.

The Gospel of this day, the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well, tells us of a remarkable meeting. Jesus asks her for some water, but He also offers her living waters, promising eternal life. As the woman talks to Jesus, her life is revealed to her. This does not result in scorn or condemnation, but healing, forgiveness and new life. She sees the truth about herself and sees God face to face. Such a meeting, in sincerity and truth, is not to be feared but welcomed, because of the new life and freedom from the burdens of the past which it brings. Note the expression of Jesus, “God is Spirit ... ” The Hebrew word for ‘spirit’ means also ‘breath’ or ‘life’. We can almost say therefore, “God is Life”. God wishes to give life to all; this is why life is so valuable.

For the Elect, those to be initiated at Easter, they have a desire for new life through Christ and have already begun to experience it to some degree. But they desire to experience greater fullness, which is the purpose of celebrating the Scrutiny. For those of us who are already Catholics, the Scrutinies are an opportunity for us to experience again the same gift of renewal of life from God. The Scrutinies include a prayer for the Elect to free them from sin, protect them from the power of Satan and help them towards salvation.

Prepararse para la Semana Santa: Comprender los escrutinios

Durante las próximas semanas, dependiendo de la misa a la que asistan, podrían escuchar un Evangelio diferente al de sus compañeros feligreses. ¿Por qué? Porque estamos entrando en un tiempo antes de la Pascua en el que escucharán la palabra Escrutinios.

¿Qué son los Escrutinios? Los Escrutinios son ritos celebrados el tercer, cuarto y quinto domingo de Cuaresma por quienes se preparan para ser bautizados en Pascua, conocidos como "Los Elegidos". Son ritos importantes y especiales de la Iglesia. Siempre que se celebran, se utilizan las lecturas bíblicas del Año A del ciclo litúrgico. Los Escrutinios son descritos por la Iglesia como “ritos de introspección y arrepentimiento, que tienen como objetivo descubrir y luego sanar todo lo que es débil, defectuoso o pecaminoso en los corazones de los elegidos; para sacar a la luz y luego fortalecer todo lo que es recto, fuerte y bueno. Los Escrutinios se celebran para liberar a los elegidos del poder del pecado y de Satanás, para protegerlos contra la tentación y para darles fuerza en Cristo, que es el camino, la verdad y la vida. Estos ritos, por lo tanto, deben completar la conversión de los elegidos y profundizar su resolución de aferrarse a Cristo y llevar a cabo su decisión de amar a Dios sobre todas las cosas”.

Los Evangelios de los tres domingos en que se celebran los Escrutinios, enseñan a los elegidos sobre el misterio del pecado y los llenan del Espíritu de Cristo. Jesús describió el propósito de su misión como “dar vida en abundancia” (Juan 10:10). Cada uno de los Evangelios que se proclaman en los tres Escrutinios ilustra esto. El primer Evangelio (la mujer samaritana junto al pozo) nos dice que Cristo es el Agua Viva. El símbolo principal en la lectura de este domingo es el agua. El agua es símbolo de vida e indica que Dios desea darnos vida, como se muestra en las historias de los israelitas en el desierto y de la mujer samaritana junto al pozo. El símbolo del agua también indica el bautismo y anticipa la Pascua, cuando se celebra.

El Evangelio de este día, la historia de Jesús y la mujer samaritana junto al pozo, nos narra un encuentro extraordinario. Jesús le pide agua, pero también le ofrece agua viva, prometiéndole vida eterna. Mientras la mujer habla con Jesús, su vida le es revelada. Esto no resulta en desprecio ni condenación, sino en sanación, perdón y una nueva vida. Ella ve la verdad sobre sí misma y ve a Dios cara a cara. Un encuentro así, en sinceridad y verdad, no debe temerse, sino ser bienvenido, por la nueva vida y la liberación de las cargas del pasado que trae consigo. Note la expresión de Jesús, “Dios es Espíritu…” La palabra hebrea para ‘espíritu’ también significa ‘aliento’ o ‘vida’. Casi podemos decir, por lo tanto, “Dios es Vida”. Dios desea dar vida a todos; es por eso que la vida es tan valiosa.

Para los Elegidos, aquellos que serán iniciados en Pascua, tienen un deseo de nueva vida a través de Cristo y ya han comenzado a experimentarla en algún grado. Pero desean experimentar una mayor plenitud, que es el propósito de celebrar el Escrutinio. Para aquellos de nosotros que ya somos católicos, los Escrutinios son una oportunidad para que experimentemos nuevamente el mismo don de renovación de vida de Dios. Los Escrutinios incluyen una oración por los Elegidos para liberarlos del pecado, protegerlos del poder de Satanás y ayudarlos hacia la salvación.
