I have come to set the earth ablaze! We are to be set apart and to be purified. Every Christian must be pure to enter heaven, if we are not then heaven is not an option, maybe Purgatory is, but the purity of heaven means just that, it is the purest sense of our being. Purity speaks of the holiness we are called to live, being holy means, we are saints now, called to be perfect as our Heavenly Father is perfect. We are no longer slaves to sin, but rather we have put aside our childish ways. There is no such thing as putting on false pretense as Christians because God sees right through us. We know we are who we say we are by our fruits, our behavior, the words we speak, all being a reflection of Christ. It means we do not seek to get even, or to set the record straight, but we stand firm in the truth of Christ and forgive and move on.

To set the earth afire with his divine love speaks of the coming of the Holy Spirit amongst us, and how the same Spirit causes us to move and live and have our being. This sounds like Pentecost because it is the sending forth of the Holy Spirit to renew the face of the earth. It’s an important to a life of faith. The Holy Spirit draws us out of our comfort zones by compelling us to be compassionate, charitable, and kind. We are to be Christ- centered in everything.

As a self-proclaimed Christian, we have recognized the sin in our hearts and have removed it! To be a Christian takes work, it’s not just a feeling we seek, but is the beauty of how we maneuver the challenges we face overcoming sin and embracing the saintly life. Being a mature Christian is a most challenging task. Did you hear the story this week out of Georgia, of the woman whose husband was killed by a drunk driver? After the sentencing in court came down, she went over to the defendant and hugged him saying I forgive you. The young man was in tears and said he was sorry.

The court room stood amazed. The gesture will never bring her husband back, but her maturity as a Christian is huge, especially as news media spread it as something that stands out as odd. Forgiveness should never be off or out of place. What a shame that the act of forgiveness is seen as odd. The court room is all about letting the axe fall and not being compassionate to the perpetrator. Forgiveness is a healing truth, it changes the impact and outcome most sharply, aligning us to the refiner’s fire.

Heaven is for saints not sinners, so what does that mean? It means we must know where we stand with the Lord at all times. It means we must ask ourselves at every turn, if I were to die today would I go to heaven? Really, have you ever asked yourself that honest question? Have you? What might your answer be? What might your answer be today, right now? What type of Christians are we? Do we desire to seek the heart of Jesus, and not be concerned with just the formalities, or the appearances? Why do we come to church? These are worth contemplating. Jesus tells us we must shed ourselves of sin, yet how sinners go, some of the biggest obstacles are the very sins that seem to be repetitive and get the best of us.

The remedy is always admitting our fault, repenting of such offenses, and seeking reconciliation with God through the sacrament of confession and reception of absolution. Jesus tells us that if we follow Him, it will divide our house, and we will place ourselves in uncomfortable situations. That is what the mission of Christ calls for, to go against the grain in a world that goes with the flow. Taking a serious look at our personal values, our politics, our language, our voice, and thoughts to see if they match the same views and mission as Christ, is the necessary piece. Remember it was Mary who had chosen the better part, and we are called to do the same.

Purificado por el fuego

¡He venido a encender la tierra! Debemos ser apartados y purificados. Todo cristiano debe ser puro para entrar al cielo; si no lo somos, el cielo no es una opción; quizá el Purgatorio sí lo sea, pero la pureza del cielo significa precisamente eso: la esencia más pura de nuestro ser. La pureza habla de la santidad que estamos llamados a vivir; ser santos significa que ahora somos santos, llamados a ser perfectos como nuestro Padre Celestial es perfecto. Ya no somos esclavos del pecado, sino que hemos dejado atrás nuestras costumbres infantiles. No existe la falsa pretensión como cristianos, porque Dios ve a través de nosotros. Sabemos que somos quienes decimos ser por nuestros frutos, nuestro comportamiento, nuestras palabras; todo es un reflejo de Cristo. Significa que no buscamos vengarnos ni aclarar las cosas, sino que nos mantenemos firmes en la verdad de Cristo, perdonamos y seguimos adelante.

Incendiar la tierra con su amor divino habla de la venida del Espíritu Santo entre nosotros y de cómo ese mismo Espíritu nos impulsa a movernos, vivir y existir. Esto suena a Pentecostés porque es el envío del Espíritu Santo para renovar la faz de la tierra. Es importante para una vida de fe. El Espíritu Santo nos saca de nuestra zona de confort al impulsarnos a ser compasivos, caritativos y bondadosos. Debemos centrarnos en Cristo en todo.

Como cristianos autoproclamados, hemos reconocido el pecado en nuestros corazones y lo hemos eliminado. Ser cristiano requiere esfuerzo; no es solo un sentimiento que buscamos, sino la belleza de cómo manejamos los desafíos que enfrentamos al superar el pecado y abrazar la vida santa. Ser un cristiano maduro es una tarea sumamente desafiante. ¿Escucharon la historia de esta semana en Georgia, de la mujer cuyo esposo fue asesinado por un conductor ebrio? Después de que se dictó la sentencia, se acercó al acusado y lo abrazó diciéndole: "Te perdono". El joven, entre lágrimas, pidió disculpas.

La sala del tribunal quedó atónita. El gesto jamás traerá de vuelta a su esposo, pero su madurez como cristiana es enorme, especialmente cuando los medios de comunicación lo difundieron como algo extraño. El perdón nunca debería estar fuera de lugar. Qué lástima que el acto de perdonar se considere extraño. En el tribunal, todo se reduce a dejar caer el hacha y no ser compasivo con el ofensor. El perdón es una verdad sanadora; cambia el impacto y el resultado de forma radical, alineándonos con el fuego purificador.

El cielo es para los santos, no para los pecadores, así que ¿qué significa eso? Significa que debemos saber cuál es nuestra posición ante el Señor en todo momento. Significa que debemos preguntarnos a cada paso: si muriera hoy, ¿iría al cielo? De verdad, ¿te has hecho alguna vez esa honesta pregunta? ¿Lo has hecho? ¿Cuál podría ser tu respuesta? ¿Cuál podría ser tu respuesta hoy, ahora mismo? ¿Qué tipo de cristianos somos? ¿Deseamos buscar el corazón de Jesús y no preocuparnos solo por las formalidades o las apariencias? ¿Por qué vamos a la iglesia? Vale la pena reflexionar sobre estas cuestiones. Jesús nos dice que debemos despojarnos del pecado; sin embargo, como pecadores, algunos de los mayores obstáculos son precisamente los pecados que parecen ser repetitivos y nos dominan.

El remedio siempre es admitir nuestra culpa, arrepentirnos de tales ofensas y buscar la reconciliación con Dios mediante el sacramento de la confesión y la absolución. Jesús nos dice que si lo seguimos, dividiremos nuestra casa y nos pondremos en situaciones incómodas. Eso es lo que exige la misión de Cristo: ir a contracorriente en un mundo que fluye. Analizar seriamente nuestros valores personales, nuestra política, nuestro lenguaje, nuestra voz y nuestros pensamientos para ver si coinciden con las mismas perspectivas y la misión de Cristo es la clave. Recordemos que fue María quien eligió la mejor parte, y estamos llamados a hacer lo mismo.
