Sunday Readings for November 17, 2024

Dark and gloomy. That seems to be the readings for this Sunday. We hear that the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give out light while the stars will fall from the sky and heaven will be shaken. Why are we hearing this now with Advent just a few weeks away? Maybe one reason is that we might find within ourselves a need for relief from all the turmoil around us. That relief is a simple one, the coming of the Christ Child. Look around us as the media world tries to convince us that purchasing certain products will make us happy and will fulfill our lives and if we don’t have certain items we will be faced with days as bad as today’s readings.

In the past few years we have lived through the pandemic, which is still a part of our lives, and we have heard cries about taxic wastes, holes in ozone layer, hurricanes and climate changes and we hear people ask “What shall we do?”. Yet our readings do contain a few grains of hope. They talk about a time of great distress but also about those who will be saved. It reminds us that there will be a final judgment where the faithful will shine like stars. We hear about those who sleep in the dust awakening to everlasting life. This gives us hope in the promise of resurrection and eternal life with God. The readings encourage us to stay firm in our faith, even during difficult times. This perseverance is necessary to receive the promises of God. . Despite these tribulations, we have hope in Jesus’ return and ultimate victory. We are not alone; God gives us the sacraments and angels for protection. Baptism, Reconciliation, and the Eucharist strengthen us. Guardian angels and St. Michael also help us resist evil. God equips us to stand firm. against the devil’s tactics. St. Michael is a warrior for God, like a spiritual superhero who fights evil. When we feel threatened by darkness or fear, we can ask for his help and protection. He stands as a spiritual warrior against evil. The prayer to St. Michael offers peace and strength, especially during moments of temptation. For youth, it is a daily reminder to choose right over wrong and to stand firm against trials, inspired by St. Michael’s example.

LAS LECTURAS DE ESTE DOMINGO

Oscuro y sombrío. Esas parecen ser las lecturas de este domingo. Oímos que el sol se oscurecerá y la luna no dará luz mientras que las estrellas caerán del cielo y el cielo se sacudirá. ¿Por qué estamos oyendo esto ahora, cuando faltan pocas semanas para el Adviento? En los últimos años hemos vivido la pandemia, que todavía es parte de nuestras vidas, y hemos escuchado gritos sobre desechos tóxicos, agujeros en la capa de ozono, huracanes y cambios climáticos y escuchamos a la gente preguntar "¿Qué haremos?". Sin embargo, nuestras lecturas contienen algunas semillas de esperanza. Hablan de un tiempo de gran angustia, pero también de aquellos que se salvarán. Nos recuerda que habrá un juicio final donde los fieles brillarán como estrellas. Escuchamos acerca de aquellos que duermen en el polvo que despiertan a la vida eterna.
