Traditionally the Ascension of Our Lord was held 40 days after Easter, falling on a Thursday. However in most dioceses in the United States, the observance of the Solemnity of the Ascension is moved to the following Sunday, superseding the 7th Sunday of Easter. The Ascension of the Lord celebrates Jesus’ return to heaven after His resurrection. It highlights the completion of His mission on earth and the promise of His return.

Jesus instructed the apostles to wait for the Holy Spirit and then ascended to heaven. Two angels promised He would return the same way. Jesus told His disciples that the Scriptures predicted His suffering, resurrection, and the preaching of repentance. He ascended to heaven after blessing them, and they returned joyfully to Jerusalem, continually praising God. Jesus completed His work on earth, and now He returns to the Father.

As He ascends into heaven. Jesus promises the Holy Spirit to His disciples before He ascends. He tells them they will receive power from the Holy Spirit. Jesus’ ascension gives hope that we too will be with Him in heaven. Because Jesus is in heaven, we can approach God with confidence, and we are encouraged to draw near to God with a sincere heart. The Ascension reminds us that Jesus will come again, that Jesus will return in the same way He ascended.

The disciples were called to be witnesses to the ends of the earth and this mission was given to them before Jesus ascended to heaven. The disciples worshiped Jesus and were filled with joy after the Ascension. The Gospel reading shows them returning to Jerusalem with great joy. Jesus’ work didn’t end with His resurrection. He is the high priest who ascended to the heavenly Jerusalem to intercede for us. (The hymn “Jerusalem my Destiny” has been a special hymn for me.) Jesus’ resurrection leads to Pentecost and the arrival of the Holy Spirit, completing our salvation and adopting us as God’s children.

The Apostles are sent to spread this good news to all nations, a mission we continue today. The reflection connects Jesus’ ascension to the fulfillment of God’s plan for humanity, marked by our baptism and knowledge of our faith. Jesus’ ascension is not a physical journey into the sky but a transition into the spiritual parts of God’s life. This event signifies that our human nature is elevated to share in God’s way of being. The Ascension opens us to the hope of going beyond our own limitations.

The disciples’ joy and how they worshiped after Jesus’ ascension reflect this realization. By focusing on heaven, we are inspired to transform our world here on earth. (PC)

La Ascensión de Nuestro Señor

Tradicionalmente, la Ascensión de Nuestro Señor se celebraba 40 días después de Pascua, cayendo en jueves. Sin embargo, en la mayoría de las diócesis de Estados Unidos, la celebración de la Solemnidad de la Ascensión se traslada al domingo siguiente, sustituyendo en al 7º domingo de Pascua. La Ascensión del Señor celebra el regreso de Jesús al cielo después de su resurrección. Destaca la finalización de su misión en la tierra y la promesa de su regreso. Jesús instruyó a los apóstoles que esperaran al Espíritu Santo y luego ascendió al cielo.

Dos ángeles prometieron que regresaría de la misma manera. Jesús les dijo a sus discípulos que las Escrituras predijeron su sufrimiento, resurrección y la predicación del arrepenti miento. Ascendió al cielo después de bendecirlos, y regresaron con alegría a Jerusalén, alabando continuamente a Dios. Jesús completó su obra en la tierra y ahora regresa al Padre.

Al ascender al cielo, Jesús promete el Espíritu Santo a sus discípulos antes de ascender. Les dice que recibirán poder del Espíritu Santo. La ascensión de Jesús nos da la esperanza de que también estaremos con él en el cielo. Porque Jesús está en el cielo, podemos acercarnos a Dios con confianza y se nos anima a acercarnos a él con sinceridad. La ascensión nos recuerda que Jesús volverá, que regresará de la misma manera que ascendió. Los discípulos fueron llamados a ser testigos hasta los confines de la tierra y esta misión les fue encomendada antes de que Jesús ascendiera al cielo.

Los discípulos adoraron a Jesús y se llenaron de alegría después de la ascensión. El Evangelio los muestra regresando a Jerusalén con gran alegría. La obra de Jesús no terminó con su res urrección. Él es el sumo sacerdote que ascendió a la Jerusalén celestial para interceder por nosotros. (El himno "Jerusalén, mi destino" ha sido un himno especial para mí). La resurrección de Jesús conduce a Pentecostés y a la llegada del Espíritu Santo, que completa nuestra salvación y nos adopta como hijos de Dios.

Los apóstoles son enviados a difundir esta buena nueva a todas las naciones, una misión que continuamos hoy. La reflexión conecta la ascensión de Jesús con el cumplimiento del plan de Dios para la humanidad, marcado por nuestro bautismo y el conocimiento de nuestra fe. La ascensión de Jesús no es un viaje físico al cielo, sino una transición a las partes espirituales de la vida de Dios. Este evento significa que nuestra naturaleza humana se eleva para compartir la forma de ser de Dios. La As censión nos abre a la esperanza de ir más allá de nuestras propias limitaciones.
