The Exaltation of the Cross is a special commemoration for the Diocese of Phoenix as it marks the anniversary of the Papal Visit of St. Pope John Paul II in 1987. Phoenix welcomed the Pontiff, and was blessed to host such a visit, especially welcoming the would-be saint! The Exaltation of the Cross is important because we contemplate more profoundly the meaning of the Cross from which Christ has been lifted up. We are confident in the triumphant victory won by Christ’s embrace of the Cross and are affirmed in our salvific heritage.

We take part in a share in the Cross by our very lives, and how we choose to realize the healing attributes the Cross brings. Our suffering and struggles in life only take on meaning when accompanied with the Paschal Mystery. As Catholics the Cross is only complete when the Cross tells the full story. It requires that the Cross and Jesus be accompanied together, to the greatest event and act of humility ever known, the passion from which the gruesome detail of the crucifixion unfolds.

We cannot have resurrection without crucifixion; the Cross must be our identity as Christians and followers of Jesus. The challenge for us is not to avoid the Cross, but to treat every human experience of suffering, pain, inconvenience, or disappointment as an opportunity to share in Jesus’s own passion. This is a treasure trove of Catholic thought and theology because suffering is never to be in vain, no matter its form because it possesses redemptive qualities.

Redemptive suffering always counts toward our atonement, and that of others here in the world, and in Purgatory. So many people forget that aspect, and instead complain about their cross given, instead of taking it up and offering it up to God.

La Exaltación de la Cruz

La Exaltación de la Cruz es una conmemoración especial para la Diócesis de Phoenix, ya que marca el aniversario de la Visita Papal de San Juan Pablo II en 1987. Phoenix dio la bienvenida al pontífice y tuvo la bendición de ser anfitriona de dicha visita, especialmente al recibir al futuro santo. La Exaltación de la Cruz es importante porque contemplamos más profundamente el significado de la Cruz de la que Cristo fue exaltado. Confiamos en la victoria triunfal obtenida al abrazar Cristo la Cruz y nos afirmamos en nuestra herencia salvífica.

Participamos en la Cruz con nuestras propias vidas y con la forma en que elegimos realizar los atributos sanadores que ella trae. Nuestro sufrimiento y nuestras luchas en la vida solo cobran sentido cuando van acompañados del Misterio Pascual. Como católicos, la Cruz solo está completa cuando la Cruz cuenta la historia completa. Requiere que la Cruz y Jesús sean acompañados juntos, hasta el mayor evento y acto de humildad jamás conocido, la pasión de la cual se despliega el horripilante detalle de la crucifixión.

No podemos tener resurrección sin crucifixión; la Cruz debe ser nuestra identidad como cristianos y seguidores de Jesús. El desafío para nosotros no es evitar la Cruz, sino tratar cada experiencia humana de sufrimiento, dolor, inconveniencia o decepción como una oportunidad para compartir la propia pasión de Jesús. Este es un tesoro del pensamiento y la teología católica porque el sufrimiento nunca debe ser en vano, sin importar su forma, ya que posee cualidades redentoras.

El sufrimiento redentor siempre cuenta para nuestra expiación y la de los demás aquí en el mundo y en el Purgatorio. Mucha gente olvida ese aspecto y, en cambio, se queja de la cruz que les fue dada, en lugar de tomarla y ofrecérsela a Dios.
