Fervent praise and thanksgiving prevent us from ever losing our sights on God. Fervency is tough, because it requires consistency. Consistency is tough because it requires tenacity. Tenacity is tough because it requires commitment. This is what Jesus is asking, are you up for it? Jesus wants fervency. He wants a commitment. This is the message of breaking open the Word this week. Just like Jesus asked us recently in a Gospel a few Sundays back, “will you be my disciple” This is not just an “at whim” question, but is one that requires our contemplation, because Jesus is asking us for a commitment. It’s a radical decision to be His disciple. He does not want us to be wishy washy, fence-sitting, or lukewarm. He wants us to be faithful to him 24/7/365/52. That’s it.

The first thing on our mind each morning should be God, and what am I doing to get to heaven. The last thing on our mind at night, just before falling asleep, should be what have I done this day that advanced me more closely toward heaven. A big hint is that daily Mass should be part of our response! Really, especially if you are afforded time to do so. Partaking in the weight of the Mass is priceless for the soul, why wouldn’t we partake often? Luke’s Gospel is pivotal today because it fits like a piece of the puzzle relating to the call to discipleship, which also fits with our understanding of faith in relationship to hardship and sacrifice as we heard last week to have faith the size of a mustard seed, and faith that can move mountains!

We have heard the saying that the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. Mathew 26:41, when Jesus sees that His disciples have fallen asleep in the Garden of Gethsemane. This is human nature, it’s likened to spiritual ADHD, we seem to lose sight of our faith, our relationship with Jesus, going to mass regularly, yet so many other things in mind and action fill those voids like a bad attention deficit disorder. The ten lepers seeking Jesus out for healing showed faith, but the one foreigner returning to Jesus to say thank you, showed both faith and gratitude. That’s a huge difference in how we are to relate to God. Remember Jesus said if you deny me, I will deny you, yet we struggle in keeping the promise of praying a rosary we’ve promised, attended Mass as obligated on Sunday, but faltering to attend as a daily communicant.

We have priests offering Mass every day of the week in most of our parishes, the Holy Mass! yet only a portion of faithful take advantage, and remain committed taking it for granted, the one sacrament that is part of our work of getting to heaven. The other nine lepers never returned, who were they, what were they about not to give gratitude? They were the equivalent to modern day faithful people who by entitlement think they were given what was due to them, anyway, so why say thank you. To express gratitude requires humility, and the benefit of being a recipient of something blessed. Don’t lose sight of the forest for the trees.

Keep your eyes on Jesus every day. Be humble, have an attitude of gratitude, pray, receive the sacraments regularly, go to Confession regularly, if possible, Eucharist each day. These are the tools to maintain fervency, which is expected when it comes to the love of the Lord. Everything we do is informed by the Sacramental Life!

¿Qué está pidiendo Jesús?

La alabanza y la acción de gracias fervientes nos impiden perder la vista de Dios. El fervor es difícil porque requiere constancia. La constancia es difícil porque requiere tenacidad. La tenacidad es difícil porque requiere compromiso. Esto es lo que Jesús pide, ¿estás listo? Jesús quiere fervor. Quiere un compromiso. Este es el mensaje de abrir la Palabra esta semana. Tal como Jesús nos preguntó recientemente en un Evangelio hace unos domingos: "¿Quieres ser mi discípulo?". Esta no es una pregunta espontánea, sino que requiere nuestra reflexión, porque Jesús nos pide un compromiso. Ser su discípulo es una decisión radical. Él no quiere que seamos indecisos, indecisos ni tibios. Quiere que le seamos fieles las 24 horas del día, los 7 días de la semana, los 365 días del año, los 52 días de la semana. Eso es todo.

Lo primero que debemos pensar cada mañana es Dios y qué estoy haciendo para llegar al cielo. Lo último que debemos pensar por la noche, justo antes de dormirnos, es qué he hecho hoy para acercarme más al cielo. ¡Una gran pista es que la Misa diaria debería ser parte de nuestra respuesta! De verdad, especialmente si tienes tiempo para hacerlo. Participar en la misa es invaluable para el alma, ¿por qué no participaríamos a menudo? El Evangelio de Lucas es fundamental hoy porque encaja como una pieza del rompecabezas relacionado con el llamado al discipulado, que también encaja con nuestra comprensión de la fe en relación con las dificultades y el sacrificio, como escuchamos la semana pasada: tener una fe del tamaño de un grano de mostaza, ¡y una fe que puede mover montañas!

Hemos escuchado el dicho de que el espíritu está dispuesto, pero la carne es débil. Mateo 26:41, cuando Jesús ve que sus discípulos se han quedado dormidos en el Huerto de Getsemaní. Esta es la naturaleza humana, se asemeja al TDAH espiritual. Parecemos perder de vista nuestra fe, nuestra relación con Jesús, ir a misa regularmente, pero muchas otras cosas en mente y acción llenan esos vacíos como un grave trastorno de déficit de atención. Los diez leprosos que buscaban a Jesús para sanar mostraron fe, pero el extranjero que regresó a Jesús para darle las gracias mostró fe y gratitud. Esa es una gran diferencia en cómo debemos relacionarnos con Dios. Recuerden que Jesús dijo: "Si me niegas, yo te negaré". Sin embargo, luchamos por cumplir la promesa de rezar el rosario que prometimos, asistimos a misa como obligación el domingo, pero dudamos en asistir como comulgantes diarios.

Tenemos sacerdotes que ofrecen misa todos los días de la semana en la mayoría de nuestras parroquias, ¡la Santa Misa! Sin embargo, solo una parte de los fieles la aprovecha y permanece comprometida, dándola por sentado, el único sacramento que forma parte de nuestra labor para llegar al cielo. Los otros nueve leprosos nunca regresaron. ¿Quiénes eran? ¿Qué estaban haciendo para no dar gracias? Eran el equivalente a los fieles de hoy en día que, por derecho propio, creen que recibieron lo que les corresponde, así que ¿para qué dar las gracias? Expresar gratitud requiere humildad y el beneficio de recibir algo bendecido. No pierdas de vista el bosque por los árboles.

Mantén la mirada fija en Jesús cada día. Sé humilde, mantén una actitud de gratitud, reza, recibe los sacramentos con regularidad, confíesate con regularidad y, si es posible, la Eucaristía todos los días. Estas son las herramientas para mantener el fervor, algo que se espera cuando se trata del amor del Señor. ¡Todo lo que hacemos está inspirado por la Vida Sacramental!
