A Faithful Disciple Keeps His Eyes on Jesus

We encounter a powerful moment of faith, trust, and discipleship. After Jesus sends His disciples ahead in the boat, they find themselves caught in the middle of the sea during a violent storm. The wind is strong, the waves are overwhelming, and the disciples are filled with fear. In the midst of their struggle, Jesus comes toward them walking on the water and says, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter responds with faith and asks Jesus to call him out of the boat.

When Jesus says, “Come,” Peter steps out onto the water and begins walking toward Him. For a moment, Peter’s faith allows him to do something beyond his own ability. However, when he takes his eyes off Jesus and focuses on the storm around him, fear begins to overcome his faith, and he starts to sink. In that moment, Peter cries out, “Lord, save me!” Jesus immediately reaches out His hand and lifts him up. This Gospel reveals the heart of a faithful disciple. A true disciple is not someone who never experiences fear, doubt, or weakness. Instead, a faithful disciple is someone who continues to turn to Jesus in every situation. Peter teaches us that following Christ requires courage—the courage to leave behind what is comfortable, to trust in God’s call, and to walk forward even when the path seems uncertain. In our own lives, we often face storms that test our faith: moments of worry, change, disappointment, or challenges that seem impossible to overcome. Like Peter, we can become distracted by the difficulties around us and forget that Jesus is present. But Christ continues to invite us to keep our eyes on Him, trusting that His love is greater than any storm we face. Being a faithful disciple means placing our lives in Jesus’ hands and allowing Him to guide our thoughts, decisions, and actions. It means listening to His voice, serving others with love, forgiving those who hurt us, and sharing His message of hope with the world. Even when our faith feels weak, Jesus reaches out to strengthen us and remind us that we are never alone. May we have the courage to step out of our “boats” and follow Jesus with open hearts. May our faith remain strong during life’s storms, and may we always remember that Christ is with us, holding our hand and leading us safely home. “Lord Jesus, help us to keep our eyes fixed on You and become faithful disciples who trust in Your love and follow Your call each day.” (ZG)

El Discípulo Fiel Mantiene la Mirada en Jesús

Nos encontramos ante un momento poderoso de fe, confianza y discipulado. Después de que Jesús envía a sus discípulos por delante en la barca, estos se ven atrapados en medio del mar durante una violenta tormenta. El viento sopla con fuerza, las olas son abrumadoras y los discípulos están llenos de miedo. En medio de su lucha, Jesús se acerca a ellos caminando sobre las aguas y les dice: «¡Ánimo, soy yo; no tengan miedo!». Pedro responde con fe y le pide a Jesús que lo llame para salir de la barca.

Cuando Jesús dice «Ven», Pedro baja a las aguas y comienza a caminar hacia Él. Por un instante, la fe de Pedro le permite hacer algo que trasciende sus propias capacidades. Sin embargo, al apartar la mirada de Jesús y centrarse en la tormenta que lo rodea, el miedo empieza a vencer a su fe y comienza a hundirse. En ese momento, Pedro clama: «¡Señor, sálvame!». Jesús extiende inmediatamente la mano y lo levanta. Este Evangelio revela el corazón de un discípulo fiel. Un verdadero discípulo no es alguien que nunca experimenta miedo, duda o debilidad; por el contrario, un discípulo fiel es aquel que sigue acudiendo a Jesús en cualquier situación. Pedro nos enseña que seguir a Cristo requiere valentía: la valentía de dejar atrás lo que nos resulta cómodo, de confiar en el llamado de Dios y de avanzar incluso cuando el camino parece incierto. En nuestra propia vida, a menudo enfrentamos tormentas que ponen a prueba nuestra fe: momentos de preocupación, cambios, decepciones o desafíos que parecen imposibles de superar. Al igual que Pedro, podemos distraernos con las dificultades que nos rodean y olvidar que Jesús está presente. Pero Cristo sigue invitándonos a mantener la mirada puesta en Él, confiando en que su amor es más grande que cualquier tormenta que enfrentemos. Ser un discípulo fiel significa poner nuestra vida en manos de Jesús y permitirle guiar nuestros pensamientos, decisiones y acciones. Significa escuchar su voz, servir a los demás con amor, perdonar a quienes nos han hecho daño y compartir su mensaje de esperanza con el mundo. Incluso cuando sentimos que nuestra fe flaquea, Jesús tiende la mano para fortalecernos y recordarnos que nunca estamos solos. Que tengamos la valentía de salir de nuestras «barcas» y seguir a Jesús con el corazón abierto. Que nuestra fe permanezca firme durante las tormentas de la vida, y que recordemos siempre que Cristo está con nosotros, sosteniéndonos de la mano y guiándonos a salvo hacia el hogar. «Señor Jesús, ayúdanos a mantener la mirada fija en Ti y a convertirnos en discípulos fieles que confían en Tu amor y siguen Tu llamado cada día».
