Have you looked through your high school yearbook lately? Did you look at the fashions such as haircuts, clothes, jewelry that were the coolest thing in their time? They might seem a little silly today, but everyone thought they were the things to wear or have. If you wanted to be cool and fit in, you wore whatever was the rage like big hair, or bowl cuts, from leisure suits to poodle skirts because the reality is, when we were young, one of our greatest desires was just to fit in.

But the truth is that this desire is not something we grow out of, nor is it necessarily a bad desire, in and of itself, to fit in, to belong. We all just want to belong. The problem occurs with what we want to belong to and with what we will do to belong. Today's readings and the Gospel and the beatitudes teach us that belonging to Christ looks very different than belonging to the world. Where the world values the rich, the powerful, the strong, Jesus values the poor, the humble, the weak. The beatitudes are meant to comfort us, not scare us, because they promise us that, if we follow Christ and are ignored by the world, we need not worry because our ultimate happiness does not lie in this world, but in the kingdom of Heaven and our suffering will be rewarded.

The beatitudes are meant to encourage us to reject the world and embrace Christ, to have the strength to stand out and stand up for the True, the Good, and the Beautiful, and not simply whatever is fashionable. Does this mean we should ignore the world? No but it does mean our lives as Christians should look different than those who live for this world, that our lives should be visibly different from our unbelieving neighbors. The truth is that if the only exterior visible difference between you and your unbelieving neighbor is that you spend an hour on Saturday evening or Sunday at church, your life doesn't look that much different; and God wants to invite you into more, into a deeper relationship with Him.

God doesn't just want your Sunday mornings; He wants all of you. And when you embrace Him, the faith, His Church, when you make Christ the center of your life and work to build up the Kingdom of heaven, even the more "worldly" and "ordinary" activities of your day start to look different. Even the way you eat out at a restaurant or play golf starts to look different. Because the love of God that lives within you, the presence of Christ which you receive in the Eucharist, is a love that you can't help but share. It should pour out in all your actions, and shows you to be a Christian, a Catholic, a follower of Christ. Skip the fashionable; belong to Christ; and your reward will be great in heaven. (PC)

Perteneciendo a Cristo

¿Has revisado tu anuario de la escuela secundaria últimamente? ¿Te fijaste en las modas, como los peinados, la ropa, las joyas, que eran lo más moderno en su época? Puede que hoy parezcan un poco ridículas, pero todos pensaban que eran lo que había que usar o tener. Si querías ser popular e integrarte, usabas lo que estuviera de moda, como peinados voluminosos o cortes de pelo tipo tazón, desde trajes de ocio hasta faldas de caniche, porque la realidad es que, cuando éramos jóvenes, uno de nuestros mayores deseos era simplemente encajar.

Pero la verdad es que este deseo no desaparece con la edad, ni es necesariamente un deseo malo en sí mismo: el deseo de encajar, de pertenecer. Todos queremos pertenecer. El problema surge con a qué queremos pertenecer y qué estamos dispuestos a hacer para pertenecer. Las lecturas de hoy, el Evangelio y las bienaventuranzas nos enseñan que pertenecer a Cristo es muy diferente a pertenecer al mundo. Donde el mundo valora a los ricos, los poderosos, los fuertes, Jesús valora a los pobres, los humildes, los débiles.

Las bienaventuranzas están destinadas a consolarnos, no a asustarnos, porque nos prometen que, si seguimos a Cristo y somos ignorados por el mundo, no debemos preocuparnos porque nuestra felicidad última no reside en este mundo, sino en el reino de los Cielos, y nuestro sufrimiento será recompensado. Las bienaventuranzas están destinadas a animarnos a rechazar el mundo y abrazar a Cristo, a tener la fuerza para destacar y defender lo Verdadero, lo Bueno y lo Bello, y no simplemente lo que está de moda. ¿Significa esto que debemos ignorar el mundo? No, pero sí significa que nuestras vidas como cristianos deben ser diferentes a las de quienes viven para este mundo, que nuestras vidas deben ser visiblemente diferentes a las de nuestros vecinos no creyentes. La verdad es que si la única diferencia exterior visible entre tú y tu vecino no creyente es que pasas una hora el sábado por la noche o el domingo en la iglesia, tu vida no parece muy diferente; y Dios quiere invitarte a algo más, a una relación más profunda con Él.

Dios no solo quiere tus mañanas de domingo; te quiere a ti por completo. Y cuando lo abrazas a Él, a la fe, a su Iglesia, cuando haces de Cristo el centro de tu vida y trabajas para construir el Reino de los Cielos, incluso las actividades más "mundanas" y "cotidianas" de tu día comienzan a verse diferentes. Incluso la forma en que comes en un restaurante o juegas al golf empieza a verse diferente. Porque el amor de Dios que vive en ti, la presencia de Cristo que recibes en la Eucaristía, es un amor que no puedes evitar compartir. Debe manifestarse en todas tus acciones y mostrar que eres cristiano, católico, seguidor de Cristo. Deja de lado las modas pasajeras; pertenece a Cristo; y tu recompensa será grande en el cielo.
