Dear St. Catherine Laboure Family,

What does it really mean to belong to God? The Book of Exodus shows how God’s love is for those who seek Him from on high Moses sought the Lord God on top of Mount Sinai. Seeking God requires us to move to the highest heights; it is there that we aspire to seek Him out and listen to him, because He has called each of us by name.

This passage of Exodus echoes the sentiment found in Isaiah 43, where the Lord God says, “I have called you by name.” Like Jesus summoning the Twelve, He too calls them by name. At the sight of the crowds, Jesus’ heart was moved with pity for them because they were troubled and abandoned, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few; so, ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.” Then he summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits to drive them out and to cure every disease and every illness. The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddeus; Simon from Cana, and Judas Iscariot who betrayed him. Jesus sent out these twelve after instructing them thus, “Do not go into pagan territory or enter a Samaritan town. Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.” The return to ordinary time is always an opportunity to con- template the foundational aspects of the Gospel, and how we, too, are called to step up to the plate to serve the Lord. Service of our Lord is many things, from feeding the hungry, being generous with our gifts, talents, and treasures, taking care of our families, as well as the extended family of the Church. Jesus is constantly calling us and inviting us to a deeper conversion. The question is, how well are we hearing this call and heeding it?

Pertenecer a Dios: Escuchar y Seguir Su Voz

¿Qué significa realmente pertenecer a Dios? El libro del Éxodo muestra que el amor de Dios es para aquellos que lo buscan en las alturas; Moisés buscó al Señor Dios en la cima del monte Sinaí. Buscar a Dios requiere que nos elevemos a lo más alto; es allí donde aspiramos a buscarle y escucharle, porque Él ha llamado a cada uno de nosotros por nuestro nombre.

Este pasaje del Éxodo resuena con el sentimiento expresado en Isaías 43, donde el Señor Dios dice: "Te he llamado por tu nombre". Al igual que Jesús llamó a los Doce, Él también los llama por su nombre. Al ver a la multitud, el corazón de Jesús se conmovió de compasión, pues estaban afligidos y abandonados, como ovejas sin pastor. Entonces dijo a sus discípulos: "La cosecha es abundante, pero los trabajadores son pocos; por tanto, pidan al dueño de la cosecha que envíe trabajadores a su mies". Luego llamó a sus doce discípulos y les dio autoridad sobre los espíritus impuros para expulsarlos y para curar toda enfermedad y dolencia. Jesús envió a estos doce después de darles estas instrucciones: "No vayan a territorio pagano ni entren en pueblos samaritanos. Vayan más bien a las ovejas perdidas de la casa de Israel. Al ir, proclamen: 'El reino de los cielos está cerca'. Curen a los enfermos, resuciten a los muertos, limpien a los leprosos, expulsen a los demonios. Gratis lo recibieron; gratis deben darlo". El regreso al Tiempo Ordinario es siempre una oportunidad para contemplar los aspectos fundamentales del Evangelio y cómo nosotros también estamos llamados a dar un paso al frente para servir al Señor. El servicio a nuestro Señor abarca muchas cosas: desde alimentar al hambriento y ser generosos con nuestros dones, talentos y bienes, hasta cuidar de nuestras familias y de la gran familia de la Iglesia. Jesús nos llama e invita constantemente a una conversión más profunda. La pregunta es: ¿qué tan bien escuchamos este llamado y le prestamos atención?
