The final day of the liturgical year is upon us. The Solemnity of Christ the King of the Universe. This culmination of all the events surrounding our viewfinder of the liturgical year that leads us to realize more profoundly what it means to declare Christ the King of the Universe and to be his disciple. How can it be that the Church calls us to receiving Christ as king, when most of the kings depicted in sacred scripture were corrupted, diabolical, barbaric and not interested in giving away any semblance of power to a Deity. What is it about Christ as king, that he leads us with attributes of love, accountability, charity, forgiveness while being humbled, and a servant leader?

Today we are confident that Jesus came and conquered as was the will of God the Father, conquering sin and destroy death. He was not after earthly power but built a kingdom upon life eternal with God. Jesus has spent his public ministry flipping things over in sight of humility, and building a kingdom based on the beatitudes, and the laws of God, quite a different type of kingdom compared to those that were lead by other kings. The good and holy kings of the Bible are Gaspar, Melchior, and Balthazar who were inspired by God to follow a star leading to the Christ child. They are significant because they were not men of faith, yet God still revealed himself to them. Their response demonstrates that the message of salvation is for all who have ears to hear. Other holy and good kings are:

Good and holy kings

David: Considered an exemplary king who established justice and righteousness during his reign.
Asa: The first king of Judah who did not follow the idolatry of his predecessors and served God.
Jehoshaphat: The son of Asa, he was also a godly king who loved and sought God with his whole heart.
Hezekiah: He trusted in God and brought about revival by cleansing the temple and leading the people to worship God again. He is noted to have struggled with pride at one point.
Josiah: He restored the covenant with God, tore down idols, and enacted the Book of the Law. His reign was one of great spiritual reforms.

Why these kings were considered good

These kings consistently sought to follow the will of God, even when their people did not. They worked to remove idolatry and lead their kingdom back to covenant with God, leading to periods of religious revival. They are often contrasted with other kings who are described as doing "what was evil in the sight of the Lord".

We learned from the good and holy kings that those who please God by obeying him are blessed. Look what happened to the Pharoh in the time of Moses as his heart was hardened to God, God then sent the plagues upon him, and the Angel of Death as his final yet most devastating visitor. Jesus as King of Kings elevates us to a heavenly submission from which we enjoy full communion with God. It is through humbled submission that we embody Christ the most, in doing as our Savior has done and following where he goes. This requires his likeness in humility and principally in modeling charity, mercy, kindness, and compassion. These are attributes of a mature Christian. A mature Christian is the hands and feet of Jesus in the world and brings the light of Christ wherever they may go, not just to a select group of people, or to those that we prefer, but to everyone. This is why Jesus is Ruler of the Universe because it all belongs to him, and because everything is equally blessed and good if it's God's will.

Today draws us even deeper into the mystery of the Divine as we also contemplate where we are going. Advent is our next stop, we have turned the corner, and nothing is stopping us! Suddenly we are focused on holy waiting and anticipation.

We want to savor our longing for God by praying thy kingdom come.

Cristo Rey

Ha llegado el último día del año litúrgico: la Solemnidad de Cristo Rey del Universo.

Esta culminación de todos los acontecimientos que rodean nuestro año litúrgico nos lleva a comprender más profundamente lo que significa proclamar a Cristo Rey del Universo y ser sus discípulos. ¿Cómo es posible que la Iglesia nos llame a recibir a Cristo como rey, cuando la mayoría de los reyes descritos en las Sagradas Escrituras eran corruptos, diabólicos, bárbaros y no estaban interesados en ceder ningún poder a la divinidad? ¿Qué tiene Cristo como rey que nos guía con atributos de amor, responsabilidad, caridad, perdón, humildad y servicio? Hoy tenemos la certeza de que Jesús vino y venció según la voluntad de Dios Padre, venciendo el pecado y destruyendo la muerte. No buscaba el poder terrenal, sino que construyó un reino sobre la vida eterna con Dios. Jesús dedicó su ministerio público a transformar las cosas con humildad y a construir un reino basado en las bienaventuranzas y las leyes de Dios, un reino muy diferente a los que gobernaron otros reyes.

Los reyes buenos y santos de la Biblia son Gaspar, Melchor y Baltasar, quienes fueron inspirados por Dios a seguir una estrella que los guiaba hacia el niño Cristo. Son importantes porque, a pesar de no ser hombres de fe, Dios se les reveló. Su respuesta demuestra que el mensaje de salvación es para todo aquel que tenga oídos para oír.

Otros reyes buenos y santos son:

• David: Considerado un rey ejemplar que estableció la justicia y la rectitud durante su reinado.
• Asa: El primer rey de Judá, quien no siguió la idolatría de sus predecesores y sirvió a Dios.
• Josafat: Hijo de Asa, también fue un rey piadoso que amó y buscó a Dios con todo su corazón.
• Ezequías: Confió en Dios y propició un avivamiento al purificar el templo y guiar al pueblo a adorar a Dios nuevamente. Se sabe que en algún momento luchó contra el orgullo.
• Josías: Restauró el pacto con Dios, destruyó los ídolos y promulgó el Libro de la Ley. Su reinado se caracterizó por grandes reformas espirituales.

¿Por qué se consideraba buenos a estos reyes?

• Estos reyes buscaron constantemente seguir la voluntad de Dios, incluso cuando su pueblo no lo hacía.
• Trabajaron para erradicar la idolatría y guiar a su reino de regreso al pacto con Dios, lo que dio lugar a períodos de avivamiento religioso.
• A menudo se les compara con otros reyes descritos como personas que hacían "lo malo ante los ojos del Señor". Aprendimos de los reyes buenos y santos que quienes agradan a Dios obedeciéndole son bendecidos. Consideremos lo que le sucedió al faraón en tiempos de Moisés: su corazón se endureció ante Dios, Dios le envió las plagas y al Ángel de la Muerte como su última y más devastadora visita. Jesús, como Rey de Reyes, nos eleva a una sumisión celestial desde la cual disfrutamos de plena comunión con Dios. Es a través de la humilde sumisión que encarnamos a Cristo de la mejor manera, haciendo como nuestro Salvador lo hizo y siguiéndolo adonde va.

Esto requiere ser como él en humildad y, principalmente, en modelar la caridad, la misericordia, la bondad y la compasión. Estos son atributos de un cristiano maduro. Un cristiano maduro es las manos y los pies de Jesús en el mundo y lleva la luz de Cristo adondequiera que vaya, no solo a un grupo selecto de personas, o a quienes preferimos, sino a todos.

Por eso Jesús es el Soberano del Universo, porque todo le pertenece y porque todo es igualmente bendito y bueno si es la voluntad de Dios.

Hoy nos adentramos aún más en el misterio de lo Divino al contemplar también hacia dónde vamos. El Adviento es nuestra próxima parada, hemos superado la etapa inicial, ¡y nada nos detendrá! De repente, nos centramos en la santa espera y anticipación. Queremos saborear nuestro anhelo por Dios orando: «Venga tu reino».
