Epiphany is here and marks the twelfth day of Christmas. The feast day traditionally falls on January 6th but had been moved to the nearest Sunday. This was an attempt to have more people attend Mass. Today marks the visitation of the Three Magi and is most significant because we witness that the message of salvation causes us to be awakened and responsive to the voice of God. Mary, Joseph, Elizabeth, Zacharias, and the shepherds in the field all encountered the voice of God via an angel or in a dream.

Mary and the shepherds were told about God's plan of salvation, so they were stirred to go in haste and tell the good news. They were on a mission from God. Each of these people had a distinct purpose in God's plan of salvation in that they simply cooperated with God and told what was given them.

Epiphany calls us to a radical conversion from which we must first be brutally honest in our self-examination and desire to repent and be freed from the grip of sin. In doing this the Church holds in her wisdom when we attend to confession that we must state with intention the kind of sins and the number of times committed. This is to ensure that our conscience is clear in making a genuine confession and therefore being awakened to God's divine light within us.

To be awakened with Epiphany means we are sensitive to the existence of sin in our lives and move toward repentance, forgiveness and absolution. It's not always a matter of hearing the good we do, but rather a sincere reflection of our struggles, and the aha moment of epiphany that moves us out of darkness and into the light of Christ.

For the sinner and recently converted such an awakening is amazing. The seasoned person of faith also is called to move toward a more intense and deeper conversion. Epiphany is enlightenment at its root and is intensity necessary. In order to consider the milestones, we've achieved, in regards to the faith, we must look to our desire for conversion, keeping in mind the obstacles we may have in our way and remove them. Epiphany for the seasoned Christian is still an opportunity to move deeper into the spiritual life, striving for a more intense awakening.

If God could stir in the Three Magi who were Pagan, a desire to seek out the Christ-child and follow the star, can you imagine how much more an awakening He could stir in us who are faithful and love Him. Our prayer is that of these Three Wise Men, Star of wonder Star of night Star of royal beauty bright westward leading still proceeding guide us to thy perfect light. We can never be commonplace or status quo when working our faith, after the Three Magi traverse more and mountain following yonder star.

Epiphany affirms that God is not stingy with His gifts, and that He reveals Himself to anyone who is willing to be taught, whether Jew or Gentile, free or slave, rich or poor. Epiphany has significant meaning to us, and culturally opens up for us the season of carnival. Tradition holds that in these short weeks before Lent, we simply relish in the gift of the Incarnation, God coming to us in the flesh. What a great gift, what an awakening for us to see and understand who he really is.

Epifanía del Señor

La Epifanía ha llegado y marca el duodécimo día de Navidad. La festividad tradicionalmente se celebra el 6 de Enero, pero se ha trasladado al domingo más cercano. Esto se hizo para que más personas pudieran asistir a Misa. Hoy se conmemora la visita de los Tres Reyes Magos y es muy significativa porque presenciamos cómo el mensaje de salvación nos despierta y nos hace receptivos a la voz de Dios. María, José, Isabel, Zacarías y los pastores en el campo escucharon la voz de Dios a través de un ángel o en un sueño.

A María y a los pastores se les comunicó el plan de salvación de Dios, por lo que se apresuraron a ir y anunciar la buena noticia. Estaban en una misión de Dios. Cada una de estas personas tuvo un propósito específico en el plan de salvación de Dios, ya que simplemente cooperaron con Él y transmitieron lo que se les había revelado.

La Epifanía nos llama a una conversión radical, para lo cual primero debemos ser brutalmente honestos en nuestro autoexamen y desear arrepentirnos y liberarnos del yugo del pecado. Al respecto, la Iglesia, en su sabiduría, enseña que al confesarnos debemos declarar con intención el tipo de pecados y el número de veces que los hemos cometido. Esto es para asegurar que nuestra conciencia esté limpia al hacer una confesión genuina y, por lo tanto, despertar a la luz divina de Dios en nuestro interior.

Despertar con la Epifanía significa ser sensibles a la existencia del pecado en nuestras vidas y avanzar hacia el arrepentimiento, el perdón y la absolución. No se trata solo de escuchar las cosas buenas que hacemos, sino de una reflexión sincera sobre nuestras luchas y el momento de revelación de la Epifanía que nos saca de la oscuridad y nos lleva a la luz de Cristo.

Para el pecador y el recién convertido, tal despertar es asombroso. La persona de fe experimentada también está llamada a avanzar hacia una conversión más intensa y profunda. La Epifanía es iluminación en su esencia y requiere intensidad. Para considerar los logros que hemos alcanzado en relación con la fe, debemos examinar nuestro deseo de conversión, teniendo en cuenta los obstáculos que podamos encontrar en nuestro camino y eliminarlos. La Epifanía para el cristiano experimentado sigue siendo una oportunidad para profundizar en la vida espiritual, esforzándose por un despertar más intenso.

Si Dios pudo despertar en los Tres Reyes Magos, que eran paganos, el deseo de buscar al Niño Jesús y seguir la estrella, ¿se imaginan cuánto más podría despertar en nosotros, que somos fieles y lo amamos? Nuestra oración es la de estos Tres Reyes Magos: Estrella de maravilla, estrella de la noche, estrella de radiante belleza real, que nos guías hacia el oeste, sigue adelante, guíanos a tu luz perfecta. Nunca podemos ser conformistas ni quedarnos en la mediocridad al vivir nuestra fe, después de que los Tres Reyes Magos atravesaran mares y montañas siguiendo aquella estrella. La Epifanía afirma que Dios no es tacaño con sus dones, y que se revela a cualquiera que esté dispuesto a aprender, sea judío o gentil, libre o esclavo, rico o pobre.

La Epifanía tiene un significado importante para nosotros y, culturalmente, abre la temporada de carnaval. La tradición sostiene que, en estas pocas semanas antes de la Cuaresma, simplemente disfrutamos del don de la Encarnación, de Dios viniendo a nosotros en la carne. ¡Qué gran don, qué despertar para nosotros ver y comprender quién es Él realmente!
