The month of October allows us to move deep within this autumnal season. This time of year, is a necessary part of the spiritual life because it’s a season of renewal in that we are called to shed the old to make way for the new. How have we grown or matured in the spiritual life? How might we better identify with the cross of Christ and instead of wavering, actively embrace our cross each day? We are blessed to have somewhat of a sense of four seasons here in Chino Valley, as the night air begins to turn colder, and our morning sunrises are crisper. The change of seasons is also a signal for the changes we are moving through as well interiorly. St. Teresa of Avila speaks of the way to perfection, or the interior castle which reflects our soul.

It’s important for us to stop and to take it all in, because it is such moments that God is able to speak to our hearts, and if we have quieted down enough maybe a time for us to listen as well. Like the Pharisee in today’s Gospel, he seems to be well calculated in his attempt to relate to God and to pray to where his prayer is more a manipulative move, than one of deep reverence and awe of God. The tax collector and sinner in the Gospel is humbled before God which changes everything in his approach to God and what he receives in return. Humility brings about conversion, and a change of heart.

Let’s not be blind-sided by our immaturities but be willing to shed those aspects of our qualities to fit a more sanctified and virtuous ways of life. The world is a mix of many things, but humility is not something we often hear about. Being humble may not be something we strive to teach our children, like being ambitious, but it should be. Why does our culture struggle with humility, because humility is a spiritual virtue that is not easy to attain and is often linked to the way we choose to be like Christ. Being a conduit of grace is important because at times we need to be the recipient of grace, and at times we must exercise grace because the reality is grave changes to everything.

Let this autumn assist us in our return to the basics, stripping away the distractions and trading them for listening, being present, being patient, and homing in on our virtuous skills that develop us into the mature Christians we are called to be.

Solo Dios es suficiente

El mes de octubre nos permite sumergirnos en esta estación otoñal. Esta época del año es esencial para la vida espiritual, ya que es una época de renovación, ya que estamos llamados a desprendernos de lo viejo para dar paso a lo nuevo. ¿Cómo hemos crecido o madurado en la vida espiritual? ¿Cómo podemos identificarnos mejor con la cruz de Cristo y, en lugar de vacilar, abrazarla activamente cada día? Tenemos la bendición de tener una especie de sensación de cuatro estaciones aquí en Chino Valley, ya que el aire nocturno comienza a enfriarse y nuestros amaneceres son más frescos. El cambio de estación también es una señal de los cambios que estamos experimentando interiormente. Santa Teresa de Ávila habla del camino a la perfección, o del castillo interior que refleja nuestra alma.

Es importante que nos detengamos y lo asimilemos todo, porque en esos momentos Dios puede hablarnos al corazón, y si nos hemos calmado lo suficiente, quizás también tengamos tiempo para escuchar. Al igual que el fariseo del Evangelio de hoy, parece tener un buen cálculo en su intento de conectar con Dios y orar, hasta el punto de que su oración es más una maniobra manipuladora que una de profunda reverencia y admiración hacia Dios. El publicano y pecador del Evangelio se humilla ante Dios, lo cual cambia por completo su relación con Dios y lo que recibe a cambio. La humildad produce conversión y un cambio de corazón.

No nos dejemos sorprender por nuestra inmadurez, sino que estemos dispuestos a desprendernos de esas cualidades para adaptarnos a un estilo de vida más santificado y virtuoso. El mundo es una mezcla de muchas cosas, pero la humildad no es algo de lo que oigamos hablar a menudo. Ser humilde puede que no sea algo que nos esforcemos por enseñar a nuestros hijos, como ser ambiciosos, pero debería serlo. ¿Por qué nuestra cultura tiene dificultades con la humildad? Porque la humildad es una virtud espiritual difícil de alcanzar y a menudo está vinculada a cómo elegimos ser como Cristo. Ser un conducto de gracia es importante, ya que a veces necesitamos ser receptores de ella y a veces debemos ejercerla, porque la realidad es que todo cambia drásticamente.

Que este otoño nos ayude a volver a lo básico, eliminando las distracciones y cambiándolas por escuchar, estar presentes, ser pacientes y centrarnos en las virtudes que nos convierten en los cristianos maduros que estamos llamados a ser.
