In Matthew's Gospel we find a Canaanite woman desperately seeking Jesus to ask for help for her daughter. Although she did not belong to the people of Israel, she recognized the Lord in Jesus and approached Him with extraordinary faith. This passage also invites us to ask ourselves: what does it mean to be a true disciple of Jesus?

The disciples were with Jesus. They walked with Him, listened to His teachings, and witnessed His miracles. However, when the woman began to cry out, her first reaction was to ask Jesus, "Listen to her, for she is crying out after us." They were physically close to Jesus, but they still needed to learn to look at others with the heart of Jesus.

The Canaanite woman, on the other hand, shows us some of the essential qualities of the disciple: faith, humility, perseverance, and confidence. She doesn't walk away when she encounters obstacles. He comes even closer, prostrates himself before Jesus, and simply says, "Lord, help me."

Being a disciple does not only mean knowing Jesus or being close to the Church. To be a disciple means to allow Jesus to transform the way we think, love and look at others.

We too can attend Mass, know the prayers, and hear the Word of God, and yet need to learn every day to have a heart more like Christ's.

The Canaanite woman reminds us that the true disciple seeks Jesus, trusts Him, perseveres, and remains humble. And the disciples remind us that following Christ is an ongoing process of learning and conversion. (ZG)

Aprendiendo a ser Discípulos

En el Evangelio de Mateo encontramos a una mujer cananea que busca desesperadamente a Jesús para pedirle ayuda por su hija. Aunque ella no pertenecía al pueblo de Israel, reconoce en Jesús al Señor y se acerca a Él con una fe extraordinaria. Este pasaje también nos invita a preguntarnos: ¿qué significa ser un verdadero discípulo de Jesús?

Los discípulos estaban junto a Jesús. Caminaban con Él, escuchaban sus enseñanzas y presenciaban sus milagros. Sin embargo, cuando aquella mujer comenzó a clamar, su primera reacción fue pedirle a Jesús: «Atiéndela, porque viene gritando detrás de nosotros.» Estaban físicamente cerca de Jesús, pero todavía necesitaban aprender a mirar a los demás con el corazón de Jesús.

La mujer cananea, en cambio, nos muestra algunas de las cualidades esenciales del discípulo: fe, humildad, perseverancia y confianza. Ella no se aleja cuando encuentra obstáculos. Se acerca aún más, se postra ante Jesús y simplemente dice: «Señor, ayúdame.»

Ser discípulo no significa solamente conocer a Jesús o estar cerca de la Iglesia. Ser discípulo significa permitir que Jesús transforme nuestra manera de pensar, de amar y de mirar a los demás.

También nosotros podemos asistir a Misa, conocer las oraciones y escuchar la Palabra de Dios y, aun así, necesitar aprender cada día a tener un corazón más parecido al de Cristo.

La mujer cananea nos recuerda que el verdadero discípulo busca a Jesús, confía en Él, persevera y permanece humilde. Y los discípulos nos recuerdan que seguir a Cristo es un proceso continuo de aprendizaje y conversión. (ZG)
