Spiritual Focus in a World of Distractions

Living for greater things, that is the call for us all in Christ. We aspire to move beyond worldly perspectives, trading them for heavenly ones. The problem with keeping this perspective is our tunnel vision. When we fail to expand our view, we often cannot see the forest for the trees. Our faith gives us perspective, our walk in the Lord gives us focus. How focused are you? is the question.

It is so easy to be well rooted in the things of this life, thinking that if only I possessed a better car, or house, a better job? What worldly things are you chasing, what occupies your time or your heart? What are you engrossed in? Many people, including members of the faithful, struggle with worldly attachment. Think about all the vices that are available from casinos, to addictions, people seeking to fill the void often find themselves even emptier. The more that God becomes our focus, the more that we grow spiritually and mature in our faith. Spiritual maturity is key because it is by our Christian maturity that we are able to put Christ first. Spiritual maturity is a challenge because it is through wisdom and experience that we grow our faith and aspire to a more virtuous life. The virtues require a higher awareness and a desire for holiness. The readings today show us that we mustn’t chase worldly things; we must keep our focus only on Christ! The things of darkness offer nothing for us, only the things of light. So many people today are sad, disconnected, and lonely, and have lost sight of how God wants to be in our lives. Some of the lonely people are married, and it are single and disenfranchised from family. Modern culture has seen the highest levels of family estrangement because of a great disconnect. It has been said that, as human beings go, our attention spans are dwindling by the day! Scientists have shown that goldfish now hold a higher attention span than people do. Can you imagine that goldfish have outpaced us with our focus? It’s true because it's become even harder for people to pay attention during a homily, let alone read the parish bulletin. Our return to Ordinary Time moves us back to our foundations, with thinking about our focus as a key point to consider. It’s good to get back to the basics. Now that summer is upon us, what a great time to step back a bit, slow down, and refocus upon what really matters in our lives.

El Enfoque Espiritual en un Mundo Lleno de Distracciones

Vivir para cosas más grandes: ese es el llamado para todos nosotros en Cristo. Aspiramos a ir más allá de las perspectivas mundanas, cambiándolas por las celestiales. El problema para mantener esta perspectiva es nuestra visión de túnel. Cuando no logramos ampliar nuestra mirada, a menudo no vemos el bosque por mirar los árboles. Nuestra fe nos da perspectiva; nuestro caminar con el Señor nos da enfoque. La pregunta es: ¿qué tan enfocado estás?

Es muy fácil arraigarse en las cosas de esta vida, pensando: «¿Y si tan solo tuviera un coche o una casa mejores, o un mejor trabajo?». ¿Qué cosas mundanas persigues? ¿Qué ocupa tu tiempo o tu corazón? ¿En qué estás absorto? Muchas personas, incluidos los fieles, luchan contra el apego a lo mundano. Pensemos en todos los vicios disponibles, desde los casinos hasta las adicciones; quienes buscan llenar el vacío a menudo terminan sintiéndose aún más vacíos. Cuanto más centramos nuestra atención en Dios, más crecemos espiritualmente y maduramos en la fe. La madurez espiritual es clave, ya que es gracias a ella que podemos poner a Cristo en primer lugar. La madurez espiritual supone un desafío, pues es a través de la sabiduría y la experiencia como hacemos crecer nuestra fe y aspiramos a una vida más virtuosa. Las virtudes requieren una mayor conciencia y un deseo de santidad. Las lecturas de hoy nos muestran que no debemos perseguir cosas mundanas; ¡debemos mantener nuestra mirada puesta únicamente en Cristo! Las cosas de las tinieblas no nos ofrecen nada; solo las cosas de la luz valen la pena. Hoy en día, muchas personas están tristes, desconectadas y solas, y han perdido de vista cómo Dios desea estar presente en nuestras vidas. Entre las personas solitarias hay tanto casados como solteros alejados de sus familias. La cultura moderna ha visto niveles sin precedentes de distanciamiento familiar debido a una gran desconexión. Se dice que, como seres humanos, ¡nuestra capacidad de atención disminuye día a día! Los científicos han demostrado que los peces dorados tienen ahora una mayor capacidad de atención que las personas. ¿Te imaginas que los peces dorados nos hayan superado en cuanto a capacidad de concentración? Es cierto, pues a la gente le resulta cada vez más difícil prestar atención durante la homilía, por no hablar de leer el boletín parroquial. Nuestro regreso al Tiempo Ordinario nos invita a volver a los fundamentos, planteándonos como punto clave la reflexión sobre aquello en lo que centramos nuestra atención. Es bueno retomar lo esencial. Ahora que ha llegado el verano, es un momento magnífico para dar un paso atrás, bajar el ritmo y volver a centrarnos en lo que realmente importa en nuestras vidas.
